Boötes, the Herdsman
Boötes lies in the Northern Hemisphere, remaining one of
the largest constellations in the sky with an area of 907
square degrees. It follows Ursa Major around the pole. In
myth, Boötes and Ursa Major are placed in the sky by Zeus
to stop the tragedy of Boötes, or his mortal name Arcus,
from murdering his mother, who had been turned into a
bear by Hera.
Arcturus, the third brightest star in the sky, takes its
place in the Boötes constellation. In total, Boötes has
ten named stars: Alkalurops, Arcalís, Arcturus, Izar,
Merga, Muphrid, Nekkar, Nikawiy, Seginus, and Xuange.
