Capricornus, the Sea-Goat
Capricornus is one of the 12 zodiac constellations, and in
Latin, it means “the goat.” The story of Capricornus in myth
originated with the Babylonians and Sumerians. Both cultures
thought of the constellation of a goat-fish. Even though it
wasn’t cataloged until the 2nd century, many ancient
civilizations knew it as the constellation that marked
Winter’s beginning.
There are five main meteor showers associated with this
constellation: the Alpha Capricornids, the Chi Capricornids,
the Sigma Capricornids, the Tau Capricornids, and the
Capricorniden-Sagittarids. Additionally, there are five total
named stars: Algedi, Alshat, Dabih, Deneb Algedi, and Nashira.
