Cetus, the Whale or Sea Monster
Even though this constellation is known as the Whale,
its name was originally derived from the Greek myth of
Andromeda. She was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to
the sea monster Cetus who was brought by Poseidon to
punish Andromeda’s mother, Cassiopeia. She was saved by
Perseus, who had slain Cetus and then taken her to be
his wife.
There are three meteor showers associated with Cetus:
the October Cetids, the Eta Cetids, and the Omicron
Cetids. Additionally, there are eight formally named
stars in this constellation: Axólotl, Baten Kaitos,
Diphda, Kaffaljidhma, Menkar, Mira, Mpingo, and
Felixvarela.
