Cygnus, the Swan
Meaning “the swan” in Latin, Cygnus remains the most prominent
constellation in the Northern Hemisphere. Cygnus is the 16th
largest constellation in the sky with an area of 804 square
degrees. Cygnus is associated with many myths in Greek mythos,
most notably when Zeus transformed into a swan to seduce the
Spartan Queen Leda.
Cygnus only has six officially named stars: Albireo, Aljanah,
Azelfafage, Deneb, Fawaris, and Sadr. Additionally, two
meteor showers are associated with the constellation: the
October Cygnids and the Kappa Cygnids.
