Orion, the Hunter
Orion is one of the brightest and most well-known
constellations that inhabits our sky. In Greek mythology,
Orion was a great hunter who was ultimately slain by a
scorpion, represented in the sky by the constellation
Scorpius. His belt on the constellation is the distinctive
feature that allows many viewers to notice the
constellation. The asterism Orion’s Belt is made up of the
stars Alnilam, Alnitak, and Mintaka, two of which are
supergiants.
Being a total of 594 square degrees, Orion holds a total
of ten named stars: Alnilam, Alnitak, Bellatrix,
Betelgeuse, Hatysa, Meissa, Mintaka, Rigel, Saiph, and
Tabit. Additionally, this constellation also has two
meteor showers, Orionids and the Chi Orionids.
