Perseus, the Hero
Laying next to Andromeda’s constellation in the northern
sky, Perseus is named after a great hero from Greek mythology.
He slew the gorgon Medusa and saved King Cepheus and Queen
Cassiopeia’s daughter, Andromeda, who was chained to a rock as
a sacrifice to the monster Cetus. He is often pictured with
Medusa’s head in one hand and a jeweled sword in the other.
The constellation Perseus contains eight officially named
stars: Algol, Atik, Berehinya, Menkib, Miram, Mirfak, Misam,
and Muspelheim. Additionally, this constellation is most
well known for its annual Perseid meteor shower.
