Ursa Major, the Great Bear
Better known as the Big Dipper, Ursa Minor, meaning “the
great bear” in Latin, is the largest constellation in the
northern hemisphere and the third-largest in the entire
sky. There are also two meteor showers associated with the
constellation; the Alpha Ursa Majorids and the
Leonids-Ursids.
As one of the largest constellations, Ursa Major holds a
total of twenty-two formally named stars: Alcor, Alioth,
Alkaid, Alkaphrah, Alula Australis, Alula Borealis, Aniara,
Chalawan, Dombay, Dubhe, Intercrus, Liesma, Megrez, Merak,
Mizar, Muscida, Násti, Phecda, Taiyangshou, Talitha, Tania
Australis, and Tania Borealis.
